Indecision

I just felt like posting some quotes on indecision today. There has been a lot of that going on lately.

Then indecision brings its own delays, And days are lost lamenting o'er lost days. Author: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Indecision is debilitating; it feeds upon itself; it is, one might almost say, habit-forming. Not only that, but it is contagious; it transmits itself to others.
Author: H. A. Hopf

There is no more miserable human being than one in whom nothing is habitual but indecision. Author: William James

We know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road. They get run over.
Author: Aneurin Bevan

Neither have they hearts to stay, Nor wit enough to run away.
Author: Samuel Butler

Stacey,
I don't know. Maybe indecision has its advantages.
I just let things happen, most of the time. It doesn't frighten me.
It doesn't mean you let everybody manipulate or control you.
I try to live from moment to moment. I don't have big plans.
I just love to be with you; knowing you are there, and you knowing I am here. I don't know what's going to happen. Life is a mystery. Life doesn't seem to have any special meaning.

I think sometimes indecision has its advantages, but usually it is a great big time waster. I've often stood in the middle of the road, so I can't complain too much. But I get angry at myself for doing that because I look back at all the other options I could have had and all the time I could have saved.

I love being with you too. You are a fantastic person and your presence just lights up my life. Starting in September of 2005 when you first stumbled upon my blog and found me, it has been great. You've always given great advice and insight. You are a great spiritual teacher and I bet you didn't even realize that!

Well I would tell you what I think, but I'm not sure if I want to... ;-)

Mark, well of course you should tell me what you think, now that you mention it! :)

Ok, I actually didn't have anything before but there's something now. Decision really implies or points to the mind, I mean if we're gonna talk about enlightened action, I don't know that it's necessarily a 'decision' like you went through this whole analytical process based on certain information and whatnot, after all there is such as thing as not knowing.

So there can be a spontaneous action that doesn't come from a decision from a cognitive process, but that isn't indecisive - it's more non-decisive.

In any case, even if you don't decide to do something in that case you wouldn't be caught up over whether to go with this or that, there wouldn't be this inner conflict.

Hi Stacey,

Thanks for the sight - I loved the quotes on indecision and used some in a sermon I am preaching tomorrow. I think that indecision is a cancer that robs people of destiny. A ship moving in the wrong direction is easier to correct than one that is stationery. I would love to send you a copy of the message if you would like. I will probably never find this site again, but can be emailled on daniels@mychurch.com.au if you are interested. While I am not a spiritual master, I think that the bible contains significant spiritual revelation for everybody. Hope to hear from you, Daniel Sanders, Melbourne AUSTRALIA.
